Lawmakers approve state funding for preschool

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri lawmakers have given final approval to legislation that could allow some state funding for preschool.

Public schools could begin counting the children attending preschool programs toward the basic state funding they receive. It would apply to children who are eligible for free and reduced-price lunch.

Funding could begin in the 2015-2016 school year for unaccredited districts and the following academic year in districts with provisional accreditation. It would apply to all others after Missouri's school formula is fully funded.

House members passed the measure 127-18 on Friday. Earlier it passed the Senate 25-6, and it now goes to Gov. Jay Nixon.

Preschool funding is HB1689.
