Your Opinion: The father of Mother's Day

Dear Editor:

Frank E. Hering poses in football uniform. Before he was known for his role in the creation of Mother's Day, Fraternal Order of Eagles Past Grand Worthy President Frank E. Hering was a respected member of the University of Notre Dame community.

In 1896, Hering made his way to South Bend, Ind., to play quarterback for Notre Dame. Two years later, he'd become the school's athletic director while simultaneously coaching the football and baseball programs and establishing the University's first basketball program.

In 1904, he made the first public plea for the creation of Mother's Day during an Eagles event held at Indianapolis' English Opera House. For his efforts, the Society of American War Mother's presented him with their prestigious victory medal in 1929, inscribed with the phrase "Father of Mother's Day."

He is renowned for his service to the Eagles, the development of Notre Dame's football program and later established Hering House, a campus center for African-American student life. Hering served as Grand Worthy President of the F.O.E. in 1909 and again in 1911.
