Corrects score in Cardinals-Cubs to 4-3.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Chase Headley homered in the ninth inning off Aroldis Chapman, the first hit the hard-throwing lefty allowed since his return from being hit in the head by a line drive, and the San Diego Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 on Tuesday night.

The Padres got their season-high fourth straight win despite managing only three hits. Seth Smith had the only two hits that Mike Leake allowed in the first eight innings.

Headley connected on a 99 mph fastball from Chapman (0-1), who was making his second appearance since undergoing surgery to repair damage after being struck in the left eye and nose during a spring training game.

Joaquin Benoit (1-0) allowed a walk in the eighth. Huston Street got the last three outs for his 12th save in as many chances. Street hasn't allowed a run in his last 10 innings.

DIAMONDBACKS 3, NATIONALS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Bronson Arroyo scattered seven hits in his 16th career complete game and also singled twice off Stephen Strasburg, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks over the Washington Nationals.

Paul Goldschmidt doubled twice and drove in two runs.

Arroyo (4-2), who pitched two complete games for Cincinnati last season, struck out seven and walked one. Over his last three starts, he has allowed one earned run in 23 1-3 innings.

He also became the second pitcher to get two hits off Strasburg. The other was Tim Hudson.

Strasburg (3-3) went seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, striking out six with no walks.

BREWERS 5, PIRATES 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jonathan Lucroy hit a bases-loaded, two-run single, and the battered Milwaukee Brewers withstood the early exits of star outfielders Carlos Gomez and Ryan Braun to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Gomez scored the second run on Lucroy's single in the third after getting hit by a changeup from Gerrit Cole (3-3). It was their first meeting since the teams brawled last month in Pittsburgh after Cole and Gomez exchanged words.

No confrontations Tuesday, though Gomez did leave the game with lower back tightness. Manager Ron Roenicke said Gomez woke up Monday with a tight back and tried to play through it.

Braun was activated from the disabled list earlier Tuesday. His departure after the sixth was planned as he gets acclimated in his return from an oblique injury.

Marco Estrada (3-1) struck out eight in six innings. Francisco Rodriguez tossed a hitless ninth for his 16th save.

ANGELS 4, PHILLIES 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Luis Jimenez hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the sixth inning, Matt Shoemaker tossed five effective innings and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Philadelphia Phillies.

Mike Trout went 1 for 5 with more than 4,000 fans from his hometown of Millville, New Jersey in the crowd. The two-time All-Star centerfielder grew up in the small town 45 minutes south of Philadelphia.

Shoemaker (1-1) allowed two runs and three hits to beat Cliff Lee (3-4). Shoemaker made his second career start and first this season. The righty was called up to replace Hector Santiago, who was sent to the bullpen after going 0-6 with a 5.19 ERA in seven starts.

Lee allowed four unearned runs and six hits, striking out seven in seven innings. He was hurt by three errors by third baseman Cody Asche.

Ernesto Frieri pitched the ninth for his fifth save in seven tries.

CARDINALS 4, CUBS 3, 12 INNINGS

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Pinch-hitter Greg Garcia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and one out in the 12th inning, sending the St. Louis Cardinals over the Chicago Cubs.

Jhonny Peralta led off the 12th with a single for his third hit. Justin Grimm (1-2) retired Matt Holliday on a popup, but walks to Allen Craig and Yadier Molina loaded the bases for Garcia.

Seth Maness (1-2) tossed a scoreless 12th for the win. Both teams used seven pitchers.

Trailing 3-2 going into the ninth, Chicago rallied to tie it off closer Trevor Rosenthal on Emilio Bonifacio's RBI single with two outs. The blown save was the first for Rosenthal in 11 opportunities.

BRAVES 5, GIANTS 0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Mike Minor pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning and Evan Gattis drove in a run with his first career triple as the Atlanta Braves beat the San Francisco Giants for the first time in five tries this season.

Freddie Freeman, B.J Upton and Andrelton Simmons added RBI singles in a three-run sixth against Ryan Vogelsong (1-2) to help the Braves win for the fourth time in five games.

That was more than enough support for Minor (1-2), winless in his previous eight starts dating to last season. He struck out six and walked two in 6 2-3 innings.

DODGERS 7, MARLINS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Josh Beckett earned his first victory since September 2012 and the Los Angeles Dodgers kept Jacob Turner winless, beating the Miami Marlins.

Miami lost its fifth in a row after learning ace Jose Fernandez had a significant elbow tear and that the team doctor had recommended Tommy John surgery.

Beckett (1-1) gave up an unearned run and four hits over 6 2-3 innings, striking out six and walking three. The three-time All-Star was 0-6 in his last 14 starts. Beckett had a rib removed last July in a surgery to alleviate a nerve condition that was affecting his right arm.

Dodgers star Yasiel Puig extended his career-best hitting streak to 13 games with two hits.

Turner (0-1) is winless in 16 starts since last July.

INTERLEAGUE

METS 12, YANKEES 7

NEW YORK (AP) - Curtis Granderson and Daniel Murphy each hit a three-run homer, and the New York Mets roughed up fill-in starter Vidal Nuno (1-1) to beat the Yankees for a two-game sweep in the Bronx.

Granderson connected for the second consecutive game in his old ballpark, helping the Mets jump out to a quick lead after they used four homers to rally for a 9-7 victory the night before.

David Wright had three hits and two RBIs, and Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-0) pitched 3 2-3 innings in relief of a wild Zack Wheeler as the Mets earned their sixth straight win against their crosstown rivals, including a 4-0 mark last year.

Eric Young Jr. scored three runs without a hit, and the Mets won their third in a row overall to return to .500 after losing eight of nine. The banged-up Yankees learned right fielder Carlos Beltran has a bone spur in his right elbow that might require surgery, then lost their fourth in a row to drop to .500 for the first time since April 12. Both teams are 19-19.

ROYALS 5, ROCKIES 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - James Shields cooled down hot-hitting Colorado over seven sharp innings, and Lorenzo Cain and Salvador Perez both homered for Kansas City.

The only run Shields allowed came on an RBI single by Justin Morneau in the fourth inning. Shields (5-3) followed it up by retiring the final 10 batters he faced, striking out the side in the sixth inning and fanning Troy Tulowitzki for the 1,500th strikeout of his career.

Alcides Escobar added a pair of RBIs, and relievers Wade Davis and Aaron Crow wrapped up the win for the Royals, who were opening a nine-game homestand.

Franklin Morales (3-3) gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings for the Rockies.
