Sporting KC blanks Impact 3-0

MONTREAL (AP) - Dom Dwyer scored twice to give first-place Sporting Kansas City a 3-0 victory against the Montreal Impact on Saturday afternoon.

Dwyer scored the winner in the 18th minute to give Sporting (5-2-2) the lead after the Impact's Collen Warner was ejected for handling the ball with his arm in the 6-yard box.

Paulo Nagamura also scored for Kansas City in the first half, before Dwyer added his second of the game midway through the second half.

The Impact (1-5-3) have six points in the Eastern Conference.

Sporting dominated possession from the get-go, controlling the ball in the middle of the field for the first quarter of an hour.

A 17th-minute long throw-in by Kansas' Matt Besler evaded the Impact defenders and landed awkwardly in the penalty box. Troy Perkins made the initial save, but the ball rolled onto the arm of Warner, who was sprawled out on the goal line. Warner made two saves with his left arm before the referee pointed to the spot.

Dwyer's penalty kick beat Perkins low for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The red card meant more of the same for Montreal, which was penned in its own half for the remainder of the game. Kansas City finished the game with 78 percent ball possession, and 12 total shots to Montreal's four.

Sporting KC's pressure paid off when Nagamura doubled the lead in the 34th. Nagamura was left all alone to Perkins' right, and beat the Impact keeper with a weak, bouncing shot that found the far side of the net.

Dwyer added to his goal tally with a powerful left-footed shot in the 64th minute.

Sporting keeper Eric Kronberg leads the league with five shutouts and an 0.67 goals-against-average.
