June 18 execution date set for Missouri man

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Another Missouri death row inmate is facing execution in June, potentially the eighth straight month that a convicted killer will be put to death at the state prison in Bonne Terre.

The Missouri Supreme Court on Friday set an execution date of June 18 for John E. Winfield, convicted of killing two women in St. Louis County in 1996.

Since November, Missouri has executed one man every month. Another execution is scheduled for May 21 when Russell Bucklew is to be put to death.

The new execution date comes amid growing scrutiny of lethal injection following a botched execution last month in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals agreed Thursday to a six-month stay of execution for another death row inmate while an investigation is conducted.
