Finucane named SEC Freshman of the Year

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Missouri softball players Tori Finucane, Taylor Gadbois and Corrin Genovese were all named First Team All-Southeastern Conference, the league announced Tuesday.

The Tigers were led by Finucane, who was also named SEC freshman of the year. Finucane is just the second Missouri player to receive the honor in program history, joining former Tiger standout and three-time All-American Rhea Taylor, who earned the award from the Big 12 Conference in 2008.

Finucane has compiled a 21-5 overall record with 11 SEC victories to her credit so far this season. Fincuane's current overall ERA and conference ERA marks of 1.70 and 2.03 rank second-best in the SEC, while her league win tally ranks fourth in the conference.

Gadbois has been one of the biggest surprises in college softball, leading the SEC with 45 stolen bases and ranking third with 78 hits.

Genovese has built a .439 average in league games and has shown some pop in her bat in the process. The junior hit two home runs in the same inning in an 8-6 win against Georgia on March 28 and tallied her first-career grand slam to help the Tigers clinch the series at No. 3 Florida on April 27.

Senior Mackenzie Sykes also locked up a spot on the SEC All-Defensive Team at left field.

The third-seeded Tigers will take on sixth-seeded Louisiana State University at 10 a.m. Thursday in a first-round SEC Tournament game at Carolina Softball Stadium in South Carolina.
