BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - Max Novak and Matt Hatch each scored two goals to lead top-seeded Union over Vermont 5-2 on Friday in the opening game of the NCAA East Regional.

Mat Bodie also scored, Kevin Sullivan added three assists and Daniel Carr had two for the Dutchman (29-6-4). Union came into the tournament as the nation's top-ranked team for the first time in program history after winning the ECAC tournament for the third straight season.

Chris McCarthy had two goals for Vermont (20-15-3), which was making its first NCAA appearance since 2010.

Union is 13-0-1 in its last 14 games. The Dutchmen, who lost to Quinnipiac in last year's regional championship game in Providence, will face Providence on Saturday for a berth in the Frozen Four.

PROVIDENCE 4 QUINNIPIAC 0

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - Jon Gillies made 37 saves to help Providence beat Quinnipiac.

Mark Jankowski, Anthony Florentino, Shane Luke, and Trevor Mingoia scored for Providence (22-10-6). The Friars led 1-0 after the first, and scored three second-period goals.

Quinnipiac finished the season 24-10-6.

MIDWEST REGIONAL

NORTH DAKOTA 5, WISCONSIN 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Mark MacMillan deflected a shot into the goal with 1:44 to go, rallying North Dakota past top-seeded Wisconsin.

No. 3 North Dakota (24-13-3) will face second-seeded Ferris State in the regional final Saturday.

The seven-time national champions got an at-large berth when Wisconsin (24-11-2) beat Ohio State for the Big Ten title, eliminating the Buckeyes. North Dakota then knocked out its long-time rival.

MacMillan deflected Brendan O'Donnell shot from the right wing into the net - the goal was upheld on review - to break a 2-all tie. Rocco Grimaldi scored a pair of empty-net goals in the final minute.

FERRIS STATE 1, COLGATE 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Gerald Mayhew scored a power-play goal midway through the first period, and C.J. Motte made it stand up by turning away 35 shots in Ferris State's victory over Colgate.

The second-seeded Bulldogs improved to 29-10-3. Colgate finished the season 20-14-5.
