The pipes are calling

They just started a few months ago, but already the Jefferson City Firefighters Pipes and Drums group is gaining quite a following.

Ryan Back is playing the snare drum, Doug Platter is playing base drum and Mike Schultz is playing bag pipes.

"I've been playing pipes for a long time and it just happened that Ryan came out to me while we both worked at the same fire station and he expressed interest in forming a group," Schultz said. "We got together and he learned drums in about two months. Everybody thinks it's a great thing."

Schultz said they plan to participate in memorials and parades.

"We do receive support from the fire department and the fire union," he said. "We are proud that we have this resource if it is needed. Our debut was St. Patrick's Day weekend at the Elks and Paddy Malone's. Our uniforms, jackets and kilts are expensive so people have passed the hats to help defray costs and we're selling T-shirts."

Schultz said they started a Facebook page, Jefferson City Firefighters Pipes and Drums, and in a few hours they already had over 100 likes.

"Several fire fighters have expressed an interest to learn how to play the instruments and it's just a matter to get the instruments and start giving lessons to grow the group," he said.
