Students win awards at BETA convention

RUSSELLVILLE, Mo. - Cole County R-1 High School brought home first place and third place awards from the State BETA Convention recently.

Senior Andrew Ford won first place in the state in the spelling competition and may advance to the national level.

Sophomores Madie Bungart and Kayla Wyss received third place for their BETA scrapbook entry.

The school sent 18 students, two teachers and three chaperones to the Make History with BETA weekend in Branson.

Other competitions Russellville students participated in included Creative Writing, Acrylic Painting, Colored Pencil Drawing or Pencil Drawing, where they were judged on the work they do within a specified time limit.

Other students took timed written tests in English, science, social studies, Spanish or spelling.

And some worked on scrapbook, banner, website and oratory entries.

At general sessions, students saw campaign skits and speeches, talent demonstrations and nationally recognized, motivational speakers. And they voted for the next slate of state officers.

Those attending were freshmen Whitney VanWechel, Rowan Bassnett, Brianna Smith, and Reagan Johnson; sophomores Mikayla Jungmeyer, Madie Bungart, Kristin Hallford, Bailey Martin, Madison Oliver, Kayla Wyss, Curtis Keller, John Fisher and Katie Ford; juniors Joe Meili and Madison Boyer; and seniors Andrew Ford, Kelsey Schrimpf and Kristi Delaney.

Chapter sponsors are Chris Hess and Michelle Mills. Attending as adult chaperons were Brenda Jungmeyer, Renee Bungart and Susie Oliver.
