Shelby McCarty - March State Employee of the Month
Sunday, March 23, 2014
Shelby McCarty provides a face for the Missouri Department of Social Services office at 615 Howerton Court while working from the front window and switchboard.
“I’m confident to say, that you could ask anyone from those attending meetings and trainings here at Howerton, to the guys making daily deliveries, you couldn’t ask for a better face for our agency,” said Manager Anna Beckett, who nominated McCarty for the State Employee of the Month.
McCarty has an impact within the organization, too.
“Shelby has recently gone above and beyond by providing for others in need,” Beckett said.
McCarty saw a need in the community for area school children to have hats and gloves. She organized a collection, purchased a Christmas tree through a silent auction and “her giving spirit caught on.”
“Thanks to Shelby’s caring spirit, there will be many warmer area children this winter,” Beckett said.
In addition to the mitten tree, McCarty took a call from a mother the week before Christmas, too late to benefit from area agency Christmas “adoption” programs.
“Shelby took it upon herself to tell the mother she would find help,” Beckett said. “Not only did she reach out to her coworkers to start an effort to assure these children had a Christmas, she also provided numerous donations herself.”
McCarty’s work responsibilities generally stop at the front desk.
But she has shown her eagerness to reach beyond that.
“This definitely took extra effort and showed that Shelby’s drive and initiative are truly a key part in making our agency successful,” Beckett said.
“Shelby is a true picture of what the Department of Social Services is all about.”
The State Employee of the Month is selected by the State Employee of the Month Selection Committee from among nominations submitted by the 16 state departments and some elected offices. The six committee members also are members of the State Training Advisory Council.
