Jefferson City firefighters investigate smoke around Capitol

Jefferson City firefighters were called to investigate on Wednesday night after smoke was spotted drifting across the grounds of the Missouri Capitol.

A motorist crossing the Missouri River bridge reported seeing smoke wafting from the area on the north side of the Capitol.

When firefighters arrived shortly before midnight, they could smell and see smoke in the general area but could not tell where it was coming from.

They left the scene around 12:18 p.m. after determining there was no fire in the building and concluding that smoke must have originated from a controlled burn or natural cover fire in the area that had since subsided.
