JOPLIN, Mo. — The Lincoln University softball team managed to score just one run in each game while dropping both halves of a doubleheader at Missouri Southern on Tuesday.
The Blue Tigers had only three hits in the opener, falling by an 8-1 score. In the nightcap, a six-run fourth inning for the Lions doomed the Blue Tigers in a 6-1 loss.
In the lidlifter, Missouri Southern scored one run in the second and three in the third to go up 4-0.
Lincoln got its only run in the top of the fourth when Shantae Duren’s single plated Kassidey Borland, who had doubled earlier. But the Lions got two back in the bottom half to lead 6-1. Missouri Southern scored a single run in the next two innings to secure the win.
A single by Sam Kircher accounted for Lincoln’s other hit.
Jessica Cook (1-8) started and took the loss for the Blue Tigers. She gave up four earned runs on eight hits while striking out four. Alyssa Laudwig pitched the final three frames and gave up four earned runs on six hits and one walk.
The Blue Tigers struck first in the second game, as Duren led off the frame with a solo home run. But they wouldn’t score again as the Lions’ big inning won it.
No Lincoln player had multiple hits, as the Blue Tigers had five singles in addition to Duren’s homer, getting them from Borland, Kircher, Erin Sommerer, Cassidy Janicek and Madison Gooden.
Laudwig (1-9) worked all six innings while taking the loss. Four of the runs were earned, as she allowed nine hits and walked one.
Lincoln is now 2-17 overall and 0-8 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, while Missouri Southern moved to 8-14 and 2-4.
The Blue Tigers will play another league doubleheader today, as they travel to Pittsburg (Kan.) State for a 4 p.m. start.
