Alewine repeats as champion

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Erin Alewine of the University of Central Missouri is a national champion. Again.

Alewine (Jefferson City High School) claimed her second straight pentathlon title Saturday in NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, finishing with 3,926 points.

The senior, who was the top seed heading into the championships, won one event and tied for the top spot in another in taking the title. She captured the 800-meter run in a personal-best time of 2:18.17, while finishing atop the high jump with four other competitors at 5-7.

Alewine also finished fifth in the shot put (38-2) and long jump (17-11), while finishing ninth the 60-meter hurdles (9.06).

Alewine was second in the event as a sophomore and fifth as a freshman.

Central Missouri finished seventh in the final team standings with 20 points.

Adriel Hawkins (Jefferson City HIgh School) also placed in an event Saturday at the championships.

Hawkins, running for Missouri S&T, finished sixth in the men's 200-meter dash (21.67).
