SEATTLE (AP) - Former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe scored twice in the first half of his Major League Soccer debut, and new-look Toronto FC held off the Seattle Sounders 2-1 on Saturday.
Defoe's debut upstaged the return of U.S. national team midfielder Michael Bradley to MLS in his first game for Toronto. Defoe and Bradley were the centerpieces of a major offseason makeover by Toronto that also included the acquisition of Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar on loan.
All three made their season debuts against Seattle after Toronto had a bye in the first week of the season. Defoe had the most influence, giving Toronto the lead in the 17th minute, then adding a second seven minutes later off a Seattle turnover.
Clint Dempsey scored in the 68th minute for Seattle.
RAPIDS 1, RED BULLS 1, TIE
HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - Vicente Sanchez scored on a penalty kick in the 72rd minute after a controversial decision by the substitute referee and Colorado and new coach Pablo Mastroeni opened with a tie with New York.
Thierry Henry scored on a header in the 57th minute for the Red Bulls, the defending Supporters' Shield winners who were trying to bounce back from a dismal season-opening performance in 4-1 loss at Vancouver.
The Professional Referee Organization, which manages on-field officials for Major League Soccer, has locked out officials from the Professional Soccer Referees Association, because the two sides have failed to reach agreement on a contract after the officials formed a union last year.
Substitute referee Alan Kelly awarded the penalty kick after defender Jamison Olave used his chest to knock Marvin Chavez to the grass as he took a pass from Sanchez.
Sanchez deposited the kick from the spot into the right corner of the net.
FC DALLAS 1, SPORTING KANSAS CITY 1, TIE
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - Matt Hedges scored a late goal and made a goal-line clearance in second-half stoppage time, giving unbeaten FC Dallas a draw with Sporting Kansas City.
Aurelien Collin put Sporting up 1-0 in the 81st minute, heading in Benny Feilhaber's corner kick. It was the first goal of the year for defending MLS Cup champion Kasas City (0-1-1).
But in the 90th minute, after Uri Rosell's foul gave the visitors a restart 25 yards from goal, Hedges ran onto Michel's free kick and headed it past Eric Kronberg to equalize for FC Dallas (1-0-1).
DYNAMO 1, IMPACT 0
HOUSTON (AP) - Will Bruin scored in the 40th minute to help Houston beat Montreal.
Bruin goal took a pass from Giles Barnes and chipped a shot off defender Eric Miller's foot that fell just under the crossbar. Bruin also had two goals in Houston's season-opening victory over New England. He's the first Dynamo player since Brian Ching in 2006 to score in each of the first two games of a season.
Montreal dropped to 0-2.
UNION 1, REVOLUTION 0
CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Sebastien Le Toux scored in the 31st minute, lifting Philadelphia past New England.
Le Toux received a crossing pass from Leo Fernandes and sent the ball past goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth.
The Union were coming off a 1-1 draw at Portland in their opener. The Revolution were shut out for the second straight game. They began the season with a 4-0 loss at Houston.
EARTHQUAKES 3, REAL SALT LAKE 3, TIE
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Victor Bernardez tied it in the 95th minute with his second goal and San Jose drew with Real Salt Lake.
The draw extended San Jose's unbeaten streak at Buck Shaw Stadium to 21 games in all competitions.
Chris Wondolowski also scored for the Earthquakes in their season opener. Joao Plata, Kyle Beckerman and Luke Mulholland scored for Salt Lake (1-0-1).
