NORMANDY, Mo. (AP) - Students from Normandy schools in St. Louis County are asking Missouri lawmakers to save their school district.
KTVI-TV reports that around 100 Normandy students traveled to Jefferson City Wednesday, along with superintendent Ty McNichols, school board members and community supporters.
Normandy and the neighboring Riverview Gardens districts are unaccredited. Starting this school year, unaccredited Missouri schools must pay tuition and transportation costs for students in the district who choose to attend better-performing schools. The move has left Normandy on the verge of bankruptcy.
Lawmakers are debating whether Normandy should receive taxpayer money to stay afloat. The House approved the $5-million that Normandy asked for a week ago, but a Senate appropriations committee on Tuesday reduced that amounted to $1.5 million. A final decision is still pending.
