Your Opinion: Preserve, reuse county buildings

Dear Editor:

I have enjoyed all the letters in favor of preserving the Cole County jail and sheriff's residence. I appreciate the articles about this structure informing the Cole County citizens of the possibilities and possible destruction of this historic building.

Certainly my hope is that the commissioners will keep the old Cole County jail and sheriff's residence, adaptively reuse the structure for current use by the county. Keep the historic facade, integrity, streetscape as it is. It is more financially feasible, better for heritage tourism and for Cole County citizens to enjoy, than an awkward add-on to an outstanding historic attractive courthouse designed by Frank Miller, a local architect.

Please, Cole County commissioners, preserve the 1936 Cole County jail and sheriff's residence, adaptively reuse the interior but keep the exterior for us, visitors to the City of Jefferson and future generations to enjoy.
