Missouri House approves mid-year spending bill

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Missouri House has approved a mid-year spending bill that includes money for a financially troubled school district.

The measure has $5 million aimed at keeping the Normandy School District afloat for the remaining school term. A state law has required the unaccredited school district to pay tuition and transportation for students to transfer to other districts.

House members passed the legislation 147-7 on Thursday. It now moves to the Senate.

A state education official says a recent financial analysis projects Normandy would end the school year with about $63,000 in its bank account. That is a small cushion and not enough to ensure the district can complete the year.

Some senators say it does not appear Normandy needs the full $5 million.
