Our Opinion: Ready for spring? So are we

Old Man Winter has overstayed his welcome.

A constant refrain we hear from Central Missouri residents - and elsewhere - is: "I'm ready for spring."

Mid-Missouri and much of the nation endured another round of sleet, snow, ice and bitterly cold temperatures overnight Saturday and into Sunday.

This latest barrage of severe winter weather has extended the toll on public safety, the pocketbook and personal convenience and mood.

Simply getting to and from the workplace, doctor's office or grocery store can be treacherous and nerve-wracking.

Our observation is the public largely has heeded sound advice to stay off the roadways during hazardous conditions, but that isn't always possible.

Again, we commend state, county and city crews for working countless hours to maintain safe and passable roads.

The costs to taxpayers, however, have been steep. Prior to the most recent storm, Jefferson City had spent more than $500,000 for snow removal.

Winter weather also has chilled retail sales across the country. In Associated Press story published Friday, major retailers and restaurants - including Wal-Mart, Home Depot and McDonald's - are attributing sales slowdowns and store closures to winter conditions.

The severity of winter also has dampened residents' motivation and disposition.

Flight cancellations and hazardous road conditions have curtailed travel -both business and pleasure.

Closer to home, churches, schools and association have cancelled social gatherings, activities and sporting events.

On some days, simply leaving the house is a luxury.

To say this winter has been taxing - in more ways than one - is an understatement.

We make no predictions, but we - like you - are more than ready for spring.
