Your Opinion: Long-range county facilities plan needed

Dear Editor:

Many others have expressed concern regarding the possibility of tearing down a historic part of the courthouse to rebuild at almost double the cost of renovation (approximately $1.6 million to tear down and rebuild versus $775,000 to renovate the old jail and sheriff's quarters).

Thankfully, Western District Commissioner Kris Scheperle wisely suggested looking at other options before making a choice that he described as "a Band-Aid to our bigger problem." Consequently, Presiding Commissioner Marc Ellinger rescheduled the discussion for the March 5 meeting.

With $1.6 million dollars at stake, it seems prudent to take additional time to develop a thorough facilities needs assessment and long-range plan. This would allow time for the public to see the plan and to make comments as appropriate.

In addition, the reported sales growth of the downtown businesses is a testament to the economic benefits of these historic areas and neighborhoods. The Cole County Courthouse is a part of the historic corridor east of the Capitol. The old jail and sheriff's quarters add to the character of the block. Preserving the old jail and sheriff's quarters, especially when it is cost effective, makes sense.
