Your Opinion: "Feel (and preserve) the history'

Dear Editor:

Recent information about the future of the Cole County jail and sheriff's residence has been interesting.

In reviewing the proposals outlined, there is little doubt the renovation of the existing structure is the plan which should go forward. In challenging economic times a savings of thousands of dollars for our community is significant.

Equally important is the architectural value of the building.

Demolition of the old jail and sheriff's residence would be one more piece of our capital city history being chipped away.

We're fortunate to have various organizations promote our history and the beauty of our community and yet we continue to tear down rather than restore and preserve. Has the city slogan "Feel the History" been forgotten.

Like many other individuals, for years I was extensively involved with the Cole County Sheriff's Department. The old jail and sheriff's residence is a significant piece of history and should be renovated and preserved.

If torn down the structure can be added to an ever expanding list of structures which have been discarded as piles of rubble stone, brick and dust.

"Feel the History."
