Open house to highlight sidewalk project

The Cole County Public Works Department will hold an open house Tuesday to discuss the progress on the Pioneer Trail School Safe Routes to Schools Project.

For the public meeting, residents are invited to come and go from 4-6 p.m. at Pioneer Trail Elementary.

Design work on the project began last June. Since then, the design team has performed a field walk through and developed preliminary plans that show property owner impacts, including proposed right-of-way or easements.

Public works officials said the project's impact on property owners would be minimal. The new sidewalk will be within the right-of-way so only temporary construction easements are needed to be able to do the finish grading of the yards. There is one except to this in the area close to the Rainbow Drive/Pioneer Trail intersection. This portion of road does not have curb and gutter so they'll be doing some more significant road work to build the new sidewalk. The work will require additional right-of-way, but the area is within the residential development area near the school and the right of way would be required anyway when the subdivision is expanded.

This project is a Safe Routes to Schools project that was awarded a $250,000 grant from MoDOT.

The project limits begin on Business 50 West at Pioneer Trail Drive and end on Rainbow Drive at Hunters Run.
