Occupants evacuate burning apartment complex

Fire broke out in a Jefferson City apartment complex early today, forcing residents to evacuate as smoke filled the building.

Firefighters responded around 12:15 a.m. to a structure fire at 2101 Alpine Court. The street is a cul de sac off Hutton Lane.

Upon arrival, they discovered smoke showing outside the building and an alarm sounding. An occupant of the building had already been knocking on apartment doors to rouse residents to evacuate.

Initial reports indicate ambulance staff examined some of the residents for possible smoke inhalation.

Residents were allowed to return to their apartments after firefighters cleared the scene.
