For many years, an ordinance has prohibited the private discharge of fireworks in the city limits of Jefferson City. This year, there is also no longer fireworks sales in the city limits.
Last year was the seventh and final year of an exemption that allowed fireworks stands to operate in the newly annexed areas of the city.
The stand-operators just outside the city limits expect to see more business now that no fireworks stands are in the city.
"I know the guys who were selling in town were from out-of-state, so it's nice to see people supporting local sellers," said Kurt Schlueter who has been running Jeff City Fireworks for more than 30 years at Hammann Drive, just off of U.S. 54. "It's not July yet and we've got several people today shopping so that's a good sign."
Schlueter said they've been selling since June 20, the first day fireworks sales are allowed in Missouri, and plan to stay until July 5 or 6, although sales can continue through July 10.
"Our biggest days will be July 2-4 so we're getting ready for a big push then," he said.
For 17 years, Shelly Kiesling has been operating Eastside Fireworks at Eastland Drive and Wilmor Drive. She also believes they'll see more sales this year, but it may not be due to the end of fireworks sales in the city limits.
"We've had lot's of rain this year and the ground is not as dry so when that happens our sales are usually up and we've seen that so far this year," she said.
Fireworks businesses and the Cole County Sheriff's Department also ask citizens to remember the rules about shooting off fireworks in the county.
Aside from two times a year - the 4th of July and New Year's Eve - a county ordinance states that fireworks are allowed to be shot off throughout the day in unincorporated areas, but they must cease at 11 p.m. and can resume at 9 a.m.
On July 4 and Dec. 31, there is no 11 p.m. enforcement, and the time is pushed back until 1 a.m. and can resume at 9 a.m.
