Councilman sponsors 4th Ward Citizen of the Month program

Fourth Ward Councilman Glen Costales is looking to reward those residents who keep others in mind and perform good deeds.

This month, Costales launched his 4th Ward Citizen of the Month program, which seeks to reward those who do good deeds, as long as they are not receiving any other compensation for the act.

Costales said the program is only for 4th Ward residents, but anyone can nominate a 4th Ward resident for the award. Winners will receive a minimum of $70 cash, from Costales' own pocket, as well as gift certificates donated from 4th Ward businesses, such as El Jimador, Chili's and Chick-fil-A.

Costales said the program will reward an "act of citizenship that they're not receiving any other compensation for."

"It's not part of a job, they're not like a Boy Scout or a Girl Scout that's working on a merit badge, cause they're getting compensated for that already," Costales said.

He said examples of service would be shoveling a neighbor's walkway during winter, mowing someone's lawn or helping with someone's groceries.

Costales said those wishing to nominate a 4th Ward resident should send their name, contact information and the name of the nominee to [email protected], along with a few sentences about what the nominee did. Nominations will be reviewed by a panel of city residents Costales has put together.

"There's a lot of people in the 4th Ward, and throughout town, that do things of this nature for the community," Costales said. "I want to recognize those in the 4th Ward that do that through this program. And hopefully it will grow across town."

Costales said any 4th Ward businesses interested in taking part in the program also should contact him.
