Our Opinion: An anniversary to celebrate and commemorate - together

News Tribune editorial

Please join us.

We invite you, our readers, to share your photographs documenting life in Jefferson City during the past 150 years.

A pictorial, hardcover book - "Jefferson City 150: 150 Years of Jefferson City Through the Eyes of the News Tribune and its Readers" - is one of the projects our newspaper has launched to celebrate our anniversary.

The history of this newspaper, and its forerunners, has been intertwined with the history of our community and our readers. It is only fitting, therefore, that we join together in commemorating and celebrating our shared history.

The Cole County Historical Society, Missouri State Archives and State Historical Society of Missouri graciously have partnered with us in this endeavor.

Three sessions will be held this week to scan your photographs for possible inclusion in the book. The sessions will be: 3-5 p.m. Monday at the Missouri State Archives, 600 West Main St., and noon-3 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Cole County Historical Society, 109 Madison St.

Submitted photographs should depict general interest scenes - commerce, industry, rural life, transportation, etc. - of the greater Jefferson City area from the 1860s to today. Each family may submit a maximum of 10 photographs, and each should be accompanied by a submission form, which can be downloaded at JeffersonCity.PictorialBook.com.

Private collectors of historic photographs are asked to call 360-687-6731 to arrange an appointment.

Our industry, like many others in our community, has changed dramatically in the past century and a half. The dangerous days of handling hot metal type have given way to computerized, digital operations.

Amid those changes, one constant is that serving readers for the past 150 years has been our privilege.

We thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives, we appreciate your contributions to this project and we look forward to serving you for the next 150 years.
