Driver abandons stolen vehicle after chase

Law enforcement officers chased a stolen car from Jefferson City to rural Moniteau County late Friday night before the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

Shortly after 11 p.m., Jefferson City police spotted a male suspect driving a Dodge Durango which had been reported stolen from Eldon. The driver would not pull over and the resulting chase traversed Edgewood Drive to southbound Missouri 179 to westbound Route C, with Cole County sheriff's deputies joining the pursuit.

Police followed the car to Russellville where it turned south on Route AA before heading west into Moniteau County via Mt. Olive Road and Route V. At around 11:35 p.m., the stolen car drove off the roadway in the 40500 block of Fahrni Road. The driver then ran into an adjacent field.

Officers from Jefferson City, Cole and Moniteau counties and the Missouri Highway Patrol searched the area, with a police dog assisting the effort soon after midnight. About an hour later, they pulled out of the area after being unable to locate the suspect.
