Seniors go 2-2 at HoJo tourney

SPRINGFIELD - The Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Seniors went 2-2 in action during the weekend at the Howard Johnson Tournament.

Post 5 started out by going 2-1 in pool play Friday.

The local club started out with a 6-0 win against the Southwest Missouri Blue Jays as Cody Stegemann threw a no-hitter.

Stegemann struck out 10 and walked just two in his seven-inning gem.

Post 5 took advantage of six errors by the Blue Jays, as they scored six runs on just nine hits. Trevor Schnieders had one hit and one RBI, while Logan Bax, Austin Sachse and Todd Buschjost had two hits apiece.

Jefferson City then slipped past Hillcrest 3-2 thanks to another pitching gem, as Schnieders twirled a six-hitter. Both runs were unearned and he struck out seven with just one walk in seven innings.

Hayden Strobel had two hits and one RBI for the winners, while Dylan Brauner and Cole Distler had one hit and one RBI each. Buschjost chipped in with a pair of hits.

Post 5 then wrapped up the day with a 5-4 loss to Rogersville.

Distler took the loss, working the first five innings and giving up five runs, although just one was earned. He allowed four hits and five walks while striking out seven. Buschjost worked the final frame and struck out one.

Bax and Corey Beard had one hit and one RBI apiece, while Buschjost drove in one run.

On Saturday, Post 5 was eliminated after an 11-9 loss to the Midwest Bruins.

Bax had two hits and one RBI, Hayden Haney had one hit and three RBI, Distler added one hit and two RBI, A.J. Elsworth went 3-for-3, Brauner had a triple and one RBI, Buschjost had one hit and one RBI and Stegemann drove in one run.

Jake Voss started and took the loss, giving up nine runs (six earned) on eight hits and one walk in 12/3 innings.

Elsworth pitched the next 22/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits.

Buschjost worked the final 12/3 innings and did not allow a run while giving up just one hit and two walks while striking out two.

Post 5 is now 7-2 and will begin play in the Washington Tournament on Wednesday against Creve Coeur.
