Street name change sparks residents' ire

A portion of Frog Hollow Road is on the way to being renamed Tree Valley Lane.

At the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Thursday, commissioners approved renaming Frog Hollow Road, from Edgewood Drive to Eagle Drive, which is a private road, to Tree Valley Lane.

The road is being renamed due to the city and county project seeking to realign Frog Hollow Road. The project will make the portion of Frog Hollow Road that is being renamed a dead end street, while Creek Trail Drive will be extended to connect to Missouri 179 and the rest of Frog Hollow Road in the county area. The portion of Frog Hollow Road between Eagle Drive and Missouri 179 will be removed. The project is expected to be completed in late September or early October.

The new name of Tree Valley Lane was the third suggestion by city staff. Staff's original proposal was to rename the road Fainwood Lane because of the nearby Fainwood subdivision.

Eric Barron, development services manager, said the city received several comments from property owners in the area expressing displeasure at the chosen name.

"Literally, they're all opposed to the name of Fainwood," Barron said.

According to submitted comments from the property owners, the name comes from a developer or builder of the Fainwood subdivision and property owners were opposed because of some issues with the development.

"Like many others the name "Fain anything' is offensive to many of us," wrote John Howland. "We are still dealing with problems that he left us."

Because of the comments, Barron said staff had decided to support the name Eagle Drive, which would provide continuity with the private drive the road would end with.

But Don Whitener, who testified in opposition to the change, said though the residents are appreciative that staff was no longer proposing the name Fainwood Lane, residents want a name that demonstrates the beauty of the tree-lined road.

"We prefer it to be called Tree Hollow," Whitener said.

Barron said staff wanted to stay away from names that may be easily confused with Frog Hollow Road or the nearby Creek Trail Drive and suggested Tree Valley Lane as an alternative, which Whitener said was acceptable.

The proposed name change will go to the City Council for a public hearing and review July 21.
