Birdie on final hole helps Franks win Kansas City Junior

PARKVILLE - Blair Oaks senior-to-be Kory Franks sank a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole to lock up a victory in the Lockton/Samsung Kansas City Junior that wrapped up Thursday at The National Golf Club of Kansas City.

Franks shot a 74 in the final round on the heels of a 74 in the opening round and a 70 in the second round to post a 2-over-par 218 in the event.

It was Franks' first American Junior Golf Association victory.

"I'm on Cloud 9 right now, and it doesn't even feel real," Franks said. "I need to be pinched or something. I knew I had to make that putt for the win, and I just told myself over and over again that I could do it."

Wells Padgett of Wichita, Kan., was the leader in the clubhouse at 74-73-72-219 as Franks came to the final hole.

"Never been so proud or ever dreamed this was possible," Franks posted on his Twitter account after the win.

Walker Kesterson of Hartsburg, a junior-to-be at Southern Boone, finished tied for third with a 5-over 221 (77-70-74-221).

Amy Matsuoka topped the 96-player field overall with a 216. It was her second straight win at the event.
