Your Opinion: "Let's move forward;' support transportation tax

Dear Editor:

Please consider voting for Amendment 7. Missourians need an inflation-sensitive, consistent funding source for Missouri's highways and other forms of transportation. A sales tax is not perfect, but there is no perfect tax or government funding source. The Missouri Legislature supported significant statewide efforts over the past several years to find the most acceptable highway tax funding source.

These efforts included many public meetings and lots of statewide public input, plus professional polling. The results showed that the most acceptable funding source to the public was a sales tax.

MoDOT needs funding to keep our roads, bridges, train stations, airports and ports in good repair to be ready for a growing economy. In late April, I was at the Senate hearing on this ballot issue at the Capitol. Even though some of the senators opposed this bill, they publicly acknowledged that MoDOT needs funding and they publicly praised MoDOT for efficiently and effectively managing their projects and the public's money.

Amendment 7 is the best option that Missourian's have to maintain our transportation systems for the next 10 years. Failing to act on this opportunity could set MoDOT and Missouri's economy back many years. Let's move forward.

I know this is an emotional issue for many. But facts are facts. MoDOT needs funding! There is no perfect solution. I

I am voting for Amendment 7. Don't miss this opportunity - vote for Amendment 7 on Aug. 5.
