Arrest made in weapons offense

Jefferson City police arrested Joseph M. Garcia, 32, for unlawful use of a weapon Tuesday night after officers responded to a disturbance in the 500 block of East Elm Street.

When officers arrived at about 10:45 p.m., they found several people who claimed a disturbance involving a group of people led to one person making threats and displaying a firearm.

According to witness statements, a physical disturbance broke out between two women, one of whom was the suspect's girlfriend. During the scuffle, the suspect went in an apartment and retrieved a pistol, which he brandished and threatened the other party and a number of others in the area. When the fight continued despite his threats, the suspect fired one shot into the air, which then dispersed the crowd. The suspect then went back into the apartment and was later apprehended by officers who were also able to retrieve one spent shell casing and the 9mm pistol he used.

Garcia was in the Cole County Jail on Wednesday morning pending charges.
