Independent prosecutor candidate turns in petitions

Anji Gandhi, who had announced her intentions to run for Cole County prosecutor in March as an independent candidate, turned in petitions with more than 700 names on Monday.

Gandhi, who faced a Monday deadline to complete the filing process, filed paperwork with the county clerk for her election committee and turned in more than 700 names on petitions to get her on the Nov. 4 general election ballot. She had to turn in more than 500.

County Clerk Marvin Register said it will take a couple of days to certify the signatures on the petitions.

Incumbent Republican Mark Richardson has already filed for re-election. No Democrat filed for the race.

Under Missouri elections laws, independent candidates have to submit a petition showing some support for their being part of the election ballot.

For county offices, the petitions must contain the signatures of registered voters in the county equal to at least 2 percent of the total number of votes that were cast at the last election for that specific office, or at least 10,000 voters, whichever is the smaller target.
