Your Opinion: Transportation sales tax unfair

Dear Editor:

I don't know about you, but I'm getting really irritated at the advertising in favor of the transportation sales tax. Everybody is in favor of better, safer roads and bridges and better transportation, but that's not the question to be asked. The question is why, when the most and worst wear and tear on those resources is created by big trucks, tandem trailers, etc., is this tax being levied almost exclusively on consumers?

These guys already enjoy some of the lowest fuel costs in the country here, because of our low fuel tax. We have been cutting corporate taxes and just slashed taxes where most corporation persons will be paying way less tax than individuals of comparable income in wages. Out-of-state firms will pay little or nothing additional toward the roads and bridges.

But the sales taxes we pay, already among the highest in the nation, will be increased. Low income retired persons and others who don't drive a lot (or at all) will contribute much more of their income than out-of-state firms and corporations that pay little or no sales tax on their operations. Why wasn't this done more fairly?

That's why I'm voting against the sales tax increase. It's unfair. Not because we don't need more road funds.
