Your Opinion: Transportation sales tax hits families, not truckers

Dear Editor:

It is the big trucks that are wrecking our roads.

Now the big trucking companies are attempting to get working families to pay for the destruction they inflict on our Missouri highways with their big rigs. The new sales tax (called Amendment 7) that they propose also has a ban on any new fuel taxes they might have to pay. This is a sleazy attempt to dodge paying for the destruction they cause.

But to add insult to injury consider this: The big trucking firms pay no sales taxes on the big rigs they drive. The trucks and trailers they drive are sales tax exempt. So are any parts they buy.

How sneaky can they get? They propose a sales tax increase that they won't have to pay.

That's right, the trucking firms are asking working class families to pay a new sales tax that they, the first that crush our roads, will not pay.

When a working class family buys a car or pickup they pay about eight percent sales tax. The trucking companies pay nothing, nada, zilch.

I will vote no on Amendment 7.
