Missouri puts one on preseason SEC 2nd team, three on 3rd team

COLUMBIA - Four Missouri football players were named to the preseason all-Southeastern Conference Team when the voting by the media was annnounced Thursday.

Defensive end Markus Golden, a senior, was voted to the second-team defensive line. Golden led Missouri with 55 tackles last season, including 13 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.

Three Tigers were named to the third-team list. Juniors Evan Boehm and Andrew Baggett made the list at center and kicker, respectively, while senior Marcus Murphy made it as a tailback.

Boehm returns from an offensive line that blocked for 237.9 rushing yards per game last season, second-best in the SEC.

Baggett was 18-for-25 on field goal attempts and 66-for-69 on extra points. He tallied 120 points in the 2013 season, fourth-best in Missouri history.

Murphy, a return threat as well as tailback, enters his final season with 3,191 all-purpose yards, good for eighth-best in program history.

Missouri did not receive a single vote from the 293 media members on the list for SEC champion, and the Tigers were picked to finish fourth out of seven teams in the Eastern Division.

Golden and Boehm represented Missouri at SEC Media Days on Wednesday, along with coach Gary Pinkel and quarterback Maty Mauk. The voting for the preseason All-SEC Team took place at the Media Days, which are hosted in Hoover, Alabama.

Golden and Boehm have received other preseason accolades this summer. Golden was named to the Chuck Bednarik Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch lists, and Boehm was named to the Rimington Award and Outland Trophy watch lists.

In 2013, Missouri had five players named preseason All-SEC. Murphy and defensive back E.J. Gaines were named to the second team. Baggett, offensive lineman Justin Britt and receiver Dorial Green-Beckham were named to the third team. Missouri finished the year with seven all-SEC honorees. Britt, Gaines, Kony Ealy and SEC Defensive Player of the Year Michael Sam were named to the first team. Green-Beckham and Andrew Wilson made the second team, and Golden was named honorable mention.
