Your Opinion: Criminalizing HIV an outrage

Dear Editor:

Regarding the Columbia woman accused of knowingly exposing others to HIV, the criminalizing of people living with HIV is an outrage.

Anyone who has unprotected sex with someone with whom they are not in a monogamous relationship, both partners having been tested twice, six months apart for HIV, as well as for hepatitis C and other sexually transmitted infections, is a fool.

The rules of this game changed 30 years ago. No one has any control over what another person will do, only over what they themselves will do. Criminalizing people living with STI's does not protect anyone, as criminal charges are only brought after the fact, and will not erase any infection that results from stupidity.
