DWIs, 14 speeding citations issued last weekend

The Cole County Sheriff's Department participated in a National Highway Transportation Safety Administration traffic enforcement campaign over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Deputies initiated 99 traffic stops, resulting in four DWIs, 14 speeding citations, one minor in possession of alcohol citation, three driving while suspended citations, three drug-related arrests and four other moving violations.

The sheriff's department was awarded traffic grants to fund efforts such as sobriety checkpoints and DWI enforcement. The funds cover personnel, fuel and supply costs.

Authorities said these types of enforcement efforts helped the total number of Missouri traffic deaths to decline to 757 in 2013, one of the lowest rates since the 1950s. Through July 6 of this year there have been 356 vehicular fatalities in the state.
