Your Opinion: What is city's "vision' for animal shelter?

Dear Editor:

St Francis of Assissi said "If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man." This is the phrase that guides Shelter Animal Guardians, a group of local citizens who care deeply for the well-being of animals taken in at the Jefferson City Animal Shelter. Our concerns result from numerous incidents that have occurred there over the past several years.

Recently, there has been a great deal of discussion by our elected officials and city administrators about the "vision" for Jefferson City and what that "vision" might entail. One item mentioned more than once was that city officials should have an open ear and respond to the citizens they serve.

Shelter Animal Guardians recently asked each member of our City Council to answer nine questions in an Animal Welfare Survey on our website (http://animalguardians.wix.com/sag1#!animal-welfare-survey/c1j1) allowing more than 30 days for responses. Midway through the response period, follow-up reminders were also sent.

We must wonder what kind of end result their "vision" for our city will be since not even one council member responded to either communication. To some of us, that speaks volumes.
