Your Opinion: School administrators must be more forthcoming

Dear Editor:

I am writing in response to David Wilson's Local Perspective opinion in the News Tribune June 29. While I agree citizens of Jefferson City should support new opportunities, I believe the people of Jefferson City can support them when we receive accurate and timely information to judge for ourselves if the changes are good for our community.

Wilson suggests the JC community should accept what the JCPS administrators share publicly without question. This approach does not help a community move forward.

My American history taught me there was much discussion, yelling and fighting among our forefathers before they agreed upon a final draft of our Declaration of Independence. Unfortunately there has not been open discussion between the JCPS administrators and the JC community about the changes the administrators want in the JC school system. It is clear the JCPS administration information is different from what parents, staff and teachers are saying occurs in our public schools.

I want to encourage the citizens of Jefferson City to attend the school board meeting on July 14 at 6 p.m. and the public forum meeting on July 17 at 7:30 p.m. to voice their concerns and request more accurate information about the current state of our public schools.

We can then communicate our concerns with our elected school board members and move this community forward with actions based on accurate truths rather than the idealized version of academic theory.
