Post 5 goes 2-2 at Fairview Heights tourney

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. - The Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Seniors finished 2-2 in the Fairview Heights Tournament this weekend.

Post 5 split its games Friday, opening with a 3-0 victory against Washington.

Corey Beard tossed a one-hitter in going the distance in the seven-inning contest, walking one and striking out eight in throwing just 83 pitches.

Cole Distler had three of Post 5's seven hits and scored a pair of runs. Trevor Schnieders and Hayden Strobel drove in runs, while Dylan Brauner scored the other run.

Post 5 then dropped a 5-4 decision to North Little Rock, Ark. Brauner had a pair of doubles in a nine-hit Post 5 attack, driving in two runs and scoring one. Distler, Beard and Cody Stegemann also scored for Post 5.

Schnieders took the loss, allowing seven hits and four walks while striking out seven in going the distance.

On Saturday, Post 5 pounded out 16 hits in a 13-4 win against O'Fallon West.

Logan Bax and Beard had three hits each for the winners. Brauner, Schnieders and Strobel had two each. Strobel and Bax drove in three runs, while Schnieders and Brenden Ogletree had two each.

Austin Sachse was the winner, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out five in going the distance.

Post 5 wrapped up play with an 8-4 loss to Fairview Heights.

Post 5 scored all four of its runs in the first inning on a pair of wild pitches and a two-run home run by Beard.

Stegemann took the loss for Post 5, working the first 41/3 innings. He allowed six runs (five earned) on three hits and six walks while striking out five. Distler pitched the final 12/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks.

Post 5 (13-4) will start play Wednesday at the Blue Springs Wood Bat Tournament.
