Our Opinion: Salute to our country and community
Wednesday, July 2, 2014
Salute to America is your celebration.
Central Missouri residents this year will gather in Jefferson City’s downtown area to participate in activities and enjoy entertainment spanning three days, Thursday through Saturday.
We have, in the past, referred to Salute to America as a gift to the community. And, whenever a gift is provided, a proper thank you is in order.
Dozens of sponsors, partners, supporters and friends were listed in the Salute to America section included in Saturday’s News Tribune.
In addition, the more than 30 volunteer committee chairmen listed represent hundreds of volunteers who donated their time and talents to organize this year’s event.
An event of this magnitude cannot happen with the cooperation and coordination of generous businesses and energetic, civic-minded people. They deserve our gratitude.
We also must be mindful that the scope of Salute to America requires street closures and other inconveniences.
The Jefferson City Police Department, in a news release Tuesday, requested “that all fairgoers exercise patience and courtesy, and comply with all traffic direction and parking rules during the events.”
Specifically, the department said parking will be limited to one side of the road along Mokane Road and Hibernia Road in north Jefferson City. Police also issued a reminder that discharging fireworks within the city limits is prohibited and no fireworks of any kind are permitted on the Jefferson City Memorial Airport property.
Whenever crowds gather, safety concerns and mutual respect are important. We concur with the police department’s message that “strongly encourages alcohol sensibility.” Police, and other law enforcement agencies, plan strict enforcement of drunk driving violations during the holiday weekend.
Finally, we urge everyone to remember the July 4th holiday is a celebration of our nation’s independence.
Salute to America is a perfect opportunity to express gratitude for the country and community we are privileged to enjoy.
