California, Russellville pick up tournament wins

RUSSELLVILLE - While the final score might be staggering, the defensive performance was shocking.

The California Lady Pintos allowed just two first-half points on their way to a 68-13 victory against Warsaw in the opening round of the Russellville Tournament on Monday.

Top-seeded California led 23-2 after one quarter, 37-2 at halftime and 56-10 after three periods.

Meleigha Caudel paced the Lady Pintos with 18 points while Caitlin Meyer added 10.

Kyle McLaughlin paced Warsaw with five points.

In other action at the event, No. 2 Russellville beat No. 5 Versailles 63-53 and No. 3 Father Tolton topped No. 4 Belle 51-26.

Russellville used a huge second quarter to key its victory. After falling behind 15-14 after one period, the Lady Indians used a 19-6 advantage in the second to go up 33-21 at halftime. Russellville's lead was 48-39 after three quarters.

A.J. Grellner tossed in a game-high 26 points to paced Russellville, while Duanna Frerking had 13 to lead Versailles.

In action today, Warsaw (1-14) takes on Versailles at 5 p.m., Russellville (6-10) plays Father Tolton at 6:30 p.m. and California (11-6) face
