Human remains believed to be that of Mid-Missouri man

Authorities believe the human remains found Tuesday afternoon are that of a middle aged man.

Wednesday morning, detectives finished going over the area of the 200 block of Schumate Chapel Road where the remains were found around 4:55 p.m., Tuesday, between the parking lots of Unilever and The Church of the Nazarene.

"The body had been there for a while and was decomposing," said Jefferson City Police Department Capt. Bob Clark. "The body was found near the property's tree line after a woman went to check on what some cats were looking at."

Clark said they can't determine what the man died of so they sent the body to the Boone County Medical Examiner for further testing.

"We don't think there's anything suspicious about the death," he said. "We didn't see anything to show this was a death caused by a shooting or stabbing."

Clark also said they have been talking with family members of the man, but won't release his identity until further testing is completed. He did say they believe the man was from Mid-Missouri who had been missing for some time.
