Jacob Schulte of Helias finished with a 7-1 record in finishing second at 138 pounds in this weekend's Capital City Invitational at Fleming Field House.

The junior rolled through his pool with a 5-0 mark, winning two of those matches by fall. Schulte then won by technical fall in the quarterfinals and by decision in the semifinals to advance to Saturday night's title match.

Schulte met Jesse Jeffries of Fort Osage for the title. After a scoreless first period, Jeffries scored a reversal in the second to take a 2-0 lead into the final period.

Starting at the neutral position, Schulte got a takedown :20 into the period to tie it at 2. But Jeffries was able to pick up an escape about :15 later to make it 3-2 and that was the final score.

Also wrestling for the Crusasders in Saturday night's final session of the Invitational was Nick Gaines at 106. The freshman squared off with Dennis Barnes of Jefferson City in the third-place match.

Gaines got a late takedown in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. That was the score leading into the third period, when Barnes got a takedown and a set of back points to finish with a 7-3 victory.

Gaines finished 3-4 in the tournament.

The Crusaders finished 10th in the final team standings with 57 points.

Helias is back in action Wednesday at home in a dual against Jefferson City. The junior varsity will start at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity around 7 p.m.
