LU hoops teams looking for first MIAA victories

The Lincoln men's and women's basketball teams will try to pick up their first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association wins as the Blue Tigers take on Missouri Southern today in Joplin.

The women's game will kick off at 1 p.m., while the men's contest will follow at 3 p.m. at the Leggett and Platt Athletic Center.

The Lincoln women (3-11, 0-7) are looking to end a seven-game losing streak after suffering a season-worst 98-54 loss at Fort Hays State last week.

Meanwhile, the Lions (11-3, 5-2) enter Saturday's contest on a two-game winning streak after claiming a 72-61 victory against Lindenwood on Wednesday.

Jennifer Rosado has recently emerged as the Blue Tigers' top scorer. The junior guard is averaging 11.6 points per game and has averaged 18.5 points in the last four contests to help pace Lincoln.

Hunter Yoakum, coming off a 18-point performance against Fort Hays State, is averaging 11 points per game, while Angela Randall averages 9.2 points and leads the team in assists (2.1), steals (2.0), and rebounds (6.0).

Lincoln averages 59.5 points per game and opponents are scoring just under 70 points a night against the Blue Tigers.

Missouri Southern, which claimed a 67-55 win against Lincoln on the road last year, averages 74.3 points and has four players averaging double figures.

Dominique Mosley paces the Lions with 16.1 points and 7.4 rebounds, while Sharese Jones is averaging 14.2 points and 7.3 boards. Shonte Clay (12.6) and Nicole Hartzong (10.1) round out the top scorers for the Lions, while Alexis Fitzpatric leads Missouri Southern with 41 steals and Samantha Soyez is averaging an MIAA-best 4.8 assists.

The Lincoln men (2-13, 0-7) are also looking to snap a seven-game losing streak. The Blue Tigers, who are coming off an 88-85 loss at Fort Hays State last Saturday, haven't won a game since posting a 101-98 win in triple overtime against Talladega on Nov. 30.

It won't be easy for Lincoln to end its skid at Missouri Southern.

The Lions currently lead the MIAA with a 12-2 record, including a 6-1 mark in conference play. Missouri Southern is looking for its fourth straight win since suffering a 76-67 loss to Fort Hays State on Jan. 4.

Mike Smith has become Lincoln's most consistent scorer, averaging a team-best 16.1 points, including 11 double-digit performances in 14 contests.

Joshua Buie, who is averaging 13.9 points per game, has scored at least 20 points on five occasions this season. The junior guard also leads Lincoln in assists (3.4) and steals (1.8).

The Blue Tigers are averaging 77.7 points per contest, but opponents are putting up 88.4 points against Lincoln's defense.

That could be a problem as Missouri Southern boasts the MIAA's second-best scoring attack at 86.7 points and is allowing a little under 70 points per contest.

Marquis Addison leads the team with 16.4 points per game, while Cameron Cornelius (12.6), Jordan Talbert (12.4), and Slim Magee (11.4) round out the top scorers for the Lions.

Robert Corn, now in his 25th and final season as the head coach at Missouri Southern, picked up his 400th career win during the Lions' 70-50 victory against Lindenwood on Wednesday.
