The Jefferson City Jays had a little something extra Friday.
The Jays picked up bonus points in 15 of their 24 victories on the first day of the Capital City Wrestling Invitational at Fleming Fieldhouse.
"We're always taking about our kids to go for bonus points," Jays coach Phil Cagle said. "You never know when those extra one or two points will come in handy."
The Jays sit in third place with 30 points after the first three rounds. Park Hill, the 10-time defending Invitational champion, leads with 33 points, with Northwest sitting in second with 32. Raymore-Peculiar (28) and Holt (27) round out the top five in the 12-team event.
"It was a good three rounds for us," Cagle said.
Eight Jays finished undefeated Friday - Dennis Barnes at 106 pounds (3-0), Corbin Howard at 120 (3-0), Christian Mayberry at 126 (3-0); Jacob Brune at 132 (2-0), Logan Moriarity at 145 (3-0), Jalen Martin at 170 (2-0), Ian Coil at 195 (2-0) and Logan Coil at 285 (1-0).
"We hope they can come out and do the same thing (today), but we have to get tougher because it is going to be a battle," Cagle said.
The Jays won 24 of 30 matches on the day.
"It's still a learning process and we're happy with what we accomplished," Cagle said. "But we know it's only going to get tougher (today)."

Jacob Schulte's 3-0 performance highlighted the opening day for the Helias Crusaders.
Schulte, a junior, won once by fall, once by technical fall and once by a major decision at 138 pounds for the Crusaders.
Other Crusaders who picked up victories Friday included Logan Gaines at 106 (1-1) and Austin Schnieders at 145 (1-2).
Helias is in ninth place after the opening day with 8.5 points.
Action will resume Saturday at 9 a.m. with the final two first-round matches. The Invitational then turns into a bracketed event at 11 a.m. The championship and third-place matches are slated to start at 5 p.m. The top three finishers in each weight class will earn a medal, while the top three teams will receive trophies.

In the junior varsity portion of the Invitational, Lafayette leads the team standings after the first day with 31 points.
Jefferson City is second with 29, while Northwest (26), Holt (19) and Lebanon (18.5) round out the top five teams. Helias is in ninth place with four points.
