Jefferson City sales taxes miss mark in new year

The first sales tax receipts of the new year show a disappointing start to Jefferson City's revenue collections.

All three of the city's sales taxes came in below projections for January receipts, which actually reflect November reporting period for sales taxes.

At the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting Tuesday, 2nd Ward Councilman Shawn Schulte said January receipts show the 1 percent general sales tax coming in at $741,056, roughly $23,000 below projections.

"Not a great way to start out the year," Schulte said.

The city's half-cent capital improvement sales tax also missed projections. January receipts show the tax came in at $359,800, roughly $56,000 below projections.

Parks, Recreation and Forestry Director Bill Lockwood said the half-cent parks sales tax also missed projections, coming in at $359,708, roughly $12,000 below projections.

Lockwood and Schulte noted the receipts reflect the first month of the city's 2014 fiscal year and believe the receipts next month, which would reflect the December reporting period, hopefully will be back on track with projections.

In other business, the commission approved an agreement with Cole County to provide an extension of the city's greenway along with the county's planned improvements to Business 50 West in the Apache Flats area.

The county's project, estimated at nearly $3.5 million, will rebuild the road - which once carried U.S. 50 west from Jefferson City toward Sedalia - and add curbs and gutter, storm water drainage and a sidewalk along the south side of the road from Country Club Drive west to past South Binder Lake and Babe Ruth drives.

Under the agreement, the county also would assist in constructing an associated greenway pathway, with the parks department providing $76,000 to fund the new path.
