Plunkett murder trial begins in Callaway: jurors hear testimony from witnesses

Holts Summit woman accused of murdering her husband, a former Jefferson City police officer

The trial of Sandra Plunkett started this morning with opening statements from Callaway County Prosectuing Attorney Chris Wilson and Justin Carver, Plunkett’s public defender.

Before taking a lunch break around 12:15 p.m., the jurors (seven women and six men) heard testimonies from a 911 dispatcher, Holts Summit police officer, a Holts Summit volunteer firefighter, a Callaway County paramedic and Dori Burke — the chief forensic investigator with the Boone/Callaway Medical Examiner’s Office.

Plunkett is charged with the murder of her husband, Paul Plunkett, a retired Jefferson City police officer. The two lived in Holts Summit when Sandra Plunkett allegedly murdered her husband. He died on Jan. 1, 2011.

Police claim Plunkett originally confessed to the murder, but she later pleaded not guilty. Carver is using battered spouse syndrome as Plunkett’s defense.
