A new dance studio on the east end of town is helping Capitol City residents straighten out their two left feet.
Instructors Becky Fredrickson and Don Walker have been teaching adult dance lessons for a combined 30-plus years. They recently set up shop in Jefferson City at 2304 E. McCarty St., and are teaching lessons on Monday and Tuesday evenings at their new business, Steppin' Out Dance Studio.
On Friday night, couples filled the room, dancing on the recently installed floor, practicing their moves from previous lessons. Dancers swayed to and stepped to Latin, country, swing and more. They were even seen doing "the wobble." Every third Friday of the month, the studio hosts a dance open to the public for a small fee, giving its students a chance to practice what they've learned.
The instructors have put a lot of work into the current location and business, and hope to contribute to the east end, Frederickson noted. Apprentice Cindy Kapila is also learning to teach and helps out at the dance lessons.
"Dance is just so much fun," Frederickson said of her passion. "Anyone is welcome to come check it out."
Steppin' Out offers 6-week sessions. Mondays are ballroom dance, such as the waltz and the fox trot. They also teach the night club two step on Mondays. Tuesday night is swing night - patrons learn the east coast and west coast swing, and country. The studio has 8-10 people in each class, but also offers private lessons.
"Our objective is to get more people dancing, because its what we love," Frederickson said.
The studio teaches dancers at all skill levels and often sees couples before their wedding day. The instructor said she's even had whole families come in to learn prior to the big day.
"We just think dance is the greatest thing in the world."
