Owls win softball title

SHAWNEE, Okla. - The William Woods Owls went 4-0 and rolled to the title in the Oklahoma Baptist University Tournament over the weekend.

On Friday, the Owls opened their season with a 6-5 win against Bethany College.

A pair of freshmen led the offense. Brailee Schulte (Jefferson City High School) went 2-for-3 with three RBI, including her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot in the third inning. Beth Begemann (Southern Boone High School) went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Also for the Owls, Hannah Campbell (Russellville High School), Shelby LeCuru (Helias High School) and Lindsey LeCuru (Helias High School) had one hit apiece.

MacKenzie Bowden (Jefferson City High School) got the win in relief, pitching four shutout innings. She allowed one hit and struck out eight.

Later in the day, William Woods posted a 10-2 win against Bacone College in six innings.

Hillary Hentges (Helias High School) had a single, double and two RBI, Brittany Bexten (Linn High School) had a triple and two RBI, Lindsey LeCuru had a single and a double and Shelby LeCuru had one hit and two RBI.

On Saturday, the Owls started off with a 6-1 win against Friends University, the 24th-ranked NAIA team.

Lindsey LeCuru was 2-for-2 with a pair of home runs and three RBI, while Campbell had two hits and one RBI and Shelby LeCuru chipped in with one hit and one RBI.

William Woods then clinched the title with a 5-1 win against 15th-ranked Oklahoma Baptist.

Bowden twirled a four-hitter to get the victory, racking up 14 strikeouts in the process.

Begemann had a solo homer in the win, while Lindsey LeCuru had a single and a double.
